Today in, 1957 Althea Gibson won the U.S. Tennis Championship, making her the first African-American to do so. For some reason in MY EXPERIENCE, her contribution to tennis has been over shadowed mainly by Arthur Ashe, in terms of black history. She was the first African American to break the color barrier in Tennis PERIOD with the U.S. Nationals in 1950! Eventually she was the first to enter the Wimbledon. In 1965 She was the first to enter and Win the French Championships and then the next year in 1957 she won BOTH the Wimbledon and U.S. Nationals. SHE THEN WON BOTH AGAIN IN 1958! She paved the way for African Americans in Tennis. Lets not forget!
